The U.S. Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center in Princeton, W. Va., will host two workshops in June for wood product manufacturers and sawmill businesses.
The first workshop for wood product manufacturers will be held on Thursday, June 7. Participants will learn about the latest technologies for making value-added wood products such as cabinets, furniture and millwork. Presenters will discuss innovations in equipment, software and materials, and machine demonstrations will also be held. The workshop is geared towards business owners and managers, key company personnel, and existing and startup businesses.
The small sawmill business workshop will be held on Thursday, June 14. Workshop topics will include equipment that is currently available for small sawmill and lumber drying operations, sawing for improved hardwood lumber grades, lumber grading system basics, lumber drying basics, heating a kiln with a stick-wood water stove, profitable business and marketing strategies, and how to make value-added wood products beyond green and kiln-dried lumber.

The workshop will focus on small sawmills and lumber drying operations powered by gas and diesel engines as well as single-phase electric power. The workshop is geared toward small sawmill operators, those who dry lumber and those who want to set up a value-added wood products business.
